A little bit of life and 10 months

wow finally catching my breath just to lose it again soon 😜

School is out – summer and 108 degrees at 8pm is here in AZ.

MB and I had a rockin’ adventure touring DC and NYC with my parents and their crew. It was such a special time for the two of us and a great disconnect from the rest of my responsibilities. We saw all the sights, we shared cupcakes, we held hands walking the streets, and laughed from morning to night.

Memories from that trip keep me smiling weeks later.
Back on the home front SB is happy as can be and loves to be on the go so TB and I are getting more creative with our evenings. Think food trucks, music festivals, outdoor activities…anything that will have lots to see and allows strollers!

Hard to believe she is 10 months old. She’s constantly exploring and looking for trouble 😃 with a smile on her face. She’s getting close to taking those first steps and will smile and let you hold her as long as mommy and daddy are close by…we are working on that!

I finally finished the Happiness Project and really enjoyed the little reset it gave me as I attack life. It definitely had an affect on how I approach and think about things and had me pick up a few other focuses for the summer.

I’m also struck by a quote my pastor shared this Sunday that is so true and a great reminder. change of pace + change of place = change of perspective. I keep going back to it. Love it.

Mommy mode

Summers are tough with Mb gone but you deal.

On of the hardest things is the routine.

As a mom you have to manage the schedules, keep a routine, make sure bedtime is in check, you know the drill.

So during the summer my day job goes on holiday. I try to focus on the positive I get more time in the gym, Tb and I have some quality time, we don’t have to live on a school schedule.

Then the summer is over. Yippee. This happens just about the time you are adjusted to the non parenting schedule. So it’s time to adjust again.

Mb’s calendar which had been pretty empty is starting to fill up with school stuff and so the scheduling and working parent juggling begins. My task list is growing and my workout opportunities are dwindling.

I’m not complaining. I’m so thankful to have this problem and I miss it, but I will admit its a tough adjustment after having been on summer break.

I guess if I’m honest it’s not just that I go from one job to 2 but when school starts so does my job 3 as Brownie Leader and new job 4 on the PTO events committee.

Let’s just say my life is managed by google calendar and there are 7 different schedules overlaid to give the complete outlook for the day.

Shiver. Time to get ready for back to school and back to being a 4 job juggler. Which means adding a few more cups of joe to the day 🙂

Trying new things

So this summer has been all about trying new things…and a lot of them are working.

1) I tried a new diet- really focused on getting lots of protein. I actually even have to do protein only days a couple times a week…which are really really hard! But it works- I am down a little more than 15 pounds in the last 2 months. I still have about 15 more to go to get to my goal but I am on a weight that I haven’t seen in awhile. Love the way clothes are feeling. How I am feeling. How I am looking. The best part of the diet is it doesn’t feel so much as a diet but as more awareness of getting the right balance of food and lots of clean eating. Once in awhile having some fun but taking half the bread off the plate or only taking a handful or tortilla chips and then cutting it off. I am really proud that I was able to stick with it and get over that  hump that was making it so hard to move the needle in the right direction.

2) Reformer Pilates. I love it. After the first couple classes I was in some serious pain for days- the kind where you feel like you were sucker punched in the stomach for hours. I showed MB photos of the reformer it is pretty medieval. The classes are small never more than 5 which makes for great instruction and lately the classes have just been me…which I must admit I love and hate. They work me, really hard and challenge me. I always feel great after class but the next morning oh boy watch out. After taking classes for 2 months I had a class this week with a teacher just one on one and she kept saying whoo we can do this you are so strong….it’s fun to have someone so strong in a class so we can do the fun stuff. And she wasn’t just talking about my legs. I am starting to get some sculpted arm muscles- definition where there wasn’t. Long and lean…the summer theme.

3) Laser hair removal- bet you didn’t see that one coming. But i grabbed a groupon and decided to try it. Felt like lots of little pin pricks, but she said I received the treatment well. It’s too early to tell but it looks like come the end of summer I won’t have to shave or wax anymore and that is going to be so AWESOME! All possible by Groupon because it was like 95% off trying to get this business setup. I can’t imagine paying full price but if it works!

4) Still trying new meals….one easy chicken dish was to take a cup of fage yogurt with a 1/4 cup of parmesan cheese with black pepper. Smoother over the chicken and bake for 40min. It was so good..yummy. And healthy (the original had you using mayo)…talk about some protein in that meal! Then I made chimchuri chicken and grilled salad last night. 2 more winners. Now to figure out what next we will test the grill with.

And something not knew is missing my baby girl. We chatted today and counted the days till I get to give her a great big hug. She knew the number, 7! 7 more days! 7 more days! It won’t be long now. Late night snuggles, summer ice cream cones, swimming in the pool, TB and LB laughter….ah I can just picture it now!

And then it’s on to try CrossFit for a couple months…gotta get some stuff going on inside while this heat keeps coming.

ps I know I haven’t posted remodel photos….we finally found a new painter and he comes in 2 weeks. SO PAINFULLY SLOW!

Summer lovin’

There are lots of those sayings that sometimes can ring so true.

Summer loving.

Kid in a candy store.

The other day I found myself using them literally and figuratively.

It all started innocently. 2 girls enjoying some playtime after swim team.

Then it was time for dinner. They didn’t want the fun to end. Who were we to be the kill joys?

So we invited MB’s friend to join us. That set the girls into action.

Next thing I know I am helping zip up fancy dress. Looking for the matching purses. Doing their hair to match. Helping secure the headbands in place.

The girls were ready to go. Out for pizza that is.

Just remember I am smiling. They were both so full of summer loving.

We enjoy a great pizza. The girls enjoying each other and TB and I enjoying the benefits.

A perfect AZ evening we walked around the quarter for a bit while the girls frolicked around the fountains. Laughing. Smiling. Summer loving.

Then we saw the new candy store.

The girls wanted to go in.

We agreed and told them they could pick out a small treat.

It’s a large and pretty cool candy store. We are talking 50lb gummy bears. Mannequins dressed in candy outfits. Lots of retro candy fun too. They were the epitome of kids in a candy store.

We settled in on picking out a few jelly belly flavors. Simple sugar.

Just some kids in a candy store loving a perfect summer evening.

The first days of summer

I am going back in time a little. Just a few weeks back.

It’s the last day of school.

First day of summer is tomorrow.

MBs first summer.

Happy girl. Happy memories.

We are getting ready for bed.

MB asks if she can have a slumber party in our room.

To celebrate the end of school we say yes, but since I value my sleep and we still haven’t gotten our king bed I suggest we blow up the air matress for this slumber party.

It worked out great.

We tuck ourselves in for the night.

Our first night of summer.

We wake up the next morning. TB gets on the phone. I jump in the shower. MB stays snuggled in bed and turns on some cartoons.

I come out a few minutes later. She is happily watching TV in bed and snacking on chocolate chip muffins.

She looks at me and smiles. I kiss her forehead.

Ahh the carefree sweetness of summer.

Summer is coming

Whew I don’t know where the last couple of days have gone.

One would think I would have had time to post, but seems like I haven’t had a down moment….might have to do with ramping up my training for another triathlon in 2 weeks. The distances are longer meaning more time in the pool, on the bike, and hitting the pavement. It all is going well….but more aches and pains in my body then usual.

We had one of those perfect family Sunday’s this weekend and summer is getting so close.

The pool is still too cold for swimming, but at age 6 a hot tub is enough water. So we heated up the hot tub this weekend and spent all day outside. Playing in the pool. Watching basketball outside. Soaking in the sun. Nothing can beat that.

MB even took it upon herself to make her and TB an afternoon snack. 4 buckets with something fruity, salty, gooey, and sweet. The two lovebugs snuggled up and shared their snack making up for some lost time together.

After an afternoon of fun and sun MB settled into a long afternoon nap. Yep that is a sure sign summer is coming. Long days outside followed by that wonderful afternoon snooze.

We woke her up to end the day with pizza on the roof watching the sunset.

And then topped it off with a little TV watching outside snuggled up with our new patio heater. Yes it was 70 degrees outside and we had the heater on. I LOVED every minute of it.

Warm days and cool nights. Snuggles all day long. Rosy cheeks and sleepy eyes. Made for a perfect family Sunday.

How much can you do in one day

Exhaustion.

What a day. MB was so happy to be home….she had a long list of things she wanted to do. More than possible to be done in a day…probably even too much for a week. So we hit the highlights. Pool, Chipotle, baking cupcakes, swim lessons, back to school shoes, party prep, and checking out the Kindergarten class list…

In the words of MB. “There are so many fun things to do when it is sunny out.” Very true little one and there are lots of sunny days ahead.

We walked around the new school campus today and peeked in the classroom. Mr. Kindergarten saw us and welcomed us inside. We got to find her cubby and check out the room all on our own. MB got all shy and hid in my skirt. She hasn’t done that in years, but as I told Mr. Kindergarten that won’t last long. I see a “remember to be quiet” note on her desk in the very near future.

Going to be a busy few days but I will try to keep up with the updates of Kinder prep. Pool Party & Ice Cream Social are tomorrow…gonna be fun!

Prelude to our weekend in Indy

Our last vacation of the summer. We headed to Indy to see family and friends….it was a much-needed break after spending some time in the Franklin Courthouse.

Before we could begin our family fun my ex was determined to have MB dance in what he called a “recital”. Now MB has missed 3 recitals over the past couple years due to my ex. Recitals with costumes, dance classes that she has attended for years….this was a 4 day camp with a 15min show at the end. Of course he worked up MB to be so excited about it that we couldn’t disappoint. TB and I spent the afternoon in Cbus playing games, getting a special hair-do, and having dinner before the big show. With nothing else to do TB and I attended the whole class. The whole 2 hours of babysitting. There was a little leaping, a little dancing, snack time, arts and crafts, and the best was coloring!

Even better none of the girls were dressed in leotards except MB. Did I mention there were 3 girls? The glass started with 2 and then a friend of the teacher came in…so we had 3. In their everyday clothes and flip-flop. Even the teacher laughed when we asked when the recital was.

So after 2 hours my ex showed up with his entourage…he brought 6 other family members including himself. The other 2 girls just had a parent for pick up and I think a sibling was in tow. Yes we looked like a nutty family. They did their dance steps following the teacher who held her notebook the whole time so she could remember the steps. All this so we couldn’t leave till 9pm for a 3 hour drive home. Another poor move by my ex.

Fortunately at the end the teacher just put on the disco ball and let the kids dance. Well MB is a dancing queen…she loves our dance parties and she pulled out all her moves. Even grabbing TB for a flip mid-dance. She was in her groove. Not surprising the ex and his family were in shock, they had never seen her dance– this was all new to them???? I don’t even know how that is possible- dance parties happen weekly in our house and I have caught MB many a night turning up the radio and just busting a move. That was enough to make me smile…MB and her moves and confirming how clueless my ex is about MB.

To celebrate MB’s dance off we found a DQ and enjoyed small blizzards. Once again I had mine to myself while TB and MB swapped out their’s each trying to find the biggest piece of cookie.

With full bellies and full hearts we started out 3 hour drive and landed in Indy safe and sound at 1am.

Proof is in the pictures 🙂

The Heat is on

It official, the Heat is On. Today was the start of “monsoon” season…but no rain. Just hot.

To document the occasion I got my first burn. Nope not a sunburn. Got my body covered with all the  right levels of sunscreen by the way how in 10 years have we gone from 15SPF to 100SPF?

Ok back to my burn. I burned my hand on the garage door. Now here is the interesting part- it wasn’t t  the outside exposed to the intense sun- it was the inside of the door.

I had just collected all the trash around the house and was taking it out for the night. I watched into the sauna, whoops sorry the garage, and open the door. As I go to unlatch the screen-door my thumb gets burned. Hot, hot, hot. Now the screen-door is metal and black and after further investigation I believe the sun hits that latch- but WOW. It was hot, but I didn’t realize it would leave a mark. It did.

As I walked to the mailbox, enduring the 105 degrees, getting a little sticky – enough to make me think maybe I would get in the pool and scrub the tiles tonight. Just an excuse to cool off from my 15min walk outside. As I am walking back I notice my the big red spot on my thumb. Yep- my first burn. The first of many I imagine. Have decided the pool can wait till tomorrow- after a good hard run. That is if my bum ankle and burned thumb don’t keep me down…is it just Tuesday??? At this rate, with an incident a day, I might want to re-think the Grand Canyon hike.

Is the heat on?

Ok so it is week one of our first summer in Scottsdale. I am learning a few new things each day.

Like today I hear the A/C go on and then feel heat and smell what I think is the furnace. I go running to the thermostat, is the heat on? Nope. Ok maybe it was a fluke. Then it happens a couple more times during the day.

I finally go into Todd and say is something wrong with our A/C- why does it feel like the heat is going on. Do you feel that? Fortunately he does so I am not going nuts. Turns out when it’s over 100 outside the ducts and pipes can get a little warm so when the A/C goes on it has to pump all that hot air out before the cool air gets going. Makes sense doesn’t it.

Fortunately it only lasts for a minute or so, but it still catches me off guard each time the A/C kicks on.

Now on to getting my bum burned by the hot seat after leaving the car out in the sun for the afternoon…my neighbors are warning me of all the “hot” things to watch out for, but I am sure I will be learning by example this summer.
