What a wonderful start to March.
The sun was shining. The temps were in the 80s.
So we pulled out the layout chairs and the umbrella for my shade queens.
I managed to get a good hike in and then we even did a family run after a great soccer game. The sky was so blue!
This is why I love Scottsdale. This weather is the best. As I post this sitting outside watching the IU game with the doors open and continue to soak in the outdoors.
I hope March keeps this great weekend weather!
So we are just pulling in from picking up MB from camp and me from my run.
We see our neighbors out on the skateboard and so MB runs out to say hi.
Not more than 10 min later we had 3 more neighbors join us and were having a regular block party play-date.
There were skateboards, scooters, hula hoops, jump ropes, double dutch, chalk bubbles…and even some gingerbread cookie decorating.
9 kids in total, 1 dad, 2-4 mom’s depending on who was taking a shower…..and a full 2 hours outside running out the rest of the sugar that was in their system.
I never grew up in a neighborhood like this.
While I have no complaints about my childhood…we had the beach instead of neighbors…I have gotten used to the ‘burbs and am enjoying it. Kids playing in the streets…having so many friends around as easy play-dates, really doesn’t get much better than this.
Oh but wait it does….as I sat outside I realized that this time last year I was rotating inside a mini-van while the kids sled in -10 degree weather. We wouldn’t be outside chilling like this.
So 2 points for the neighborhood and 2 points for warmer weather.
Now off to enjoy the zoo-lights without freezing my butt!
So this week we are studying the colors of the rainbow. We have had some fun activities wearing different colors, bringing in different items. I am loving Mr. Kinder.
Yet today we were seeing Green everywhere. It has become a joke at home that MB knows everybody. Since everywhere we go she always runs into someone she knows from school, gymnastics, ….. it is pretty standard to be at dinner and hear “hey, I know her/him…they go to X. Can I go say hi”
Well today was no exception. Yet it wasn’t even like we were just down the block in our neighborhood where everyone lives. And it was wear Green day to school.
First we go to the movie theater and sure enough there is another girl in dressed in Green going to the same movie we were. They visited awhile, but the other girl was with other friends so they parted ways and MB and I went to go find our seats.
Second in a random stop at Barnes and Noble. And not even the Barnes and Noble near our house or the other one I sometimes go to. As we walk to the kids section MB spots another kid from her class. She basically chases her down Green on Green as they were leaving…so she could say hi and bye.
So the legend lives on. Less than a year in Scottsdale and MB knows everyone, everywhere. LOL
We are still adjusting to the AZ summer.
I have to admit the monsoons are really cool.
The light shows are outstanding.
Seeing the columns of rain around the valley are picturesque.
The smell of rain is just perfect.
All things I love about the monsoons. The humidity it brings I could do without.
Today’s monsoon was really special.
MB and I were driving to Chick-fil-A for kid’s night. As we drive we noticed if you look out one window it was dark, lightening, and you could see the rain. Out the other window was the blue sky.
As we pulled into the Chick-fil-A parking lot I turned to MB. Look- Chick-fil-A is in the middle. It was seriously like the separation of the storm went right down the middle of the building. It was like a line drawn in the sky between storm and blue skies.
MB and I marveled at it for a moment and then went in for dinner and 50 cent make your own sundaes. TB she wanted to make one for you with 3 scoops of oreos…so you are missed!
As we are eating dinner I look out the window and it was pouring. I say something to MB…she goes no it’s not. I look out the other window and she is right no rain. Now this Chick-fil-A is not bigger than normal. It is a normal sized joint….but seroiusly for 15min rain was pouring down on one side and there wasn’t a drop on the other side.
It was pretty crazy to watch cars go through the drive thru. Wipers on as they entered, off as they exited.
Made for some interesting weather conversation.
What will AZ storms have in store for us next.
It dawned on me this morning that Scottsdale is making it’s mark.
Last night I had a thought of MB and I riding down to Starbucks in the morning. She could ride her bike and I could run/walk with her. It is about 2 miles each way…and full of rolling hills. TB thought I was crazy. MB wasn’t so sure. So I said ok we can just drive.
Well this morning around 7am, MB woke me up and asked when we were going on our ride to Starbucks. I asked her if she was sure she wanted to ride her bike, or if she wanted to drive. She said no lets ride, we can take it easy if we need to.
So we got ourselves dressed and off we went. First off, we are up, dressed, and out the door by 7:30? Really..previously I would have been in my PJ’s for at least another hour. But we had to do this early if we didn’t want it to be hot.
The ride was great on the way there. A few times I heard her saying “I think I can, I think I can” as we went up the hills. Every few minutes she would point to a bird, bunny, or other creature on the path. We waved and said good morning to the various bikers and walkers. Happy happy calms we were. Oh I forgot MB had her camelback on and was keeping hydrated.
We ended up skipping Starbucks and hitting up the AJ’s bakery. Fruit salad to share and muffins for us both. We ate outside and enjoyed the morning.
Now the ride back wasn’t all happy. There was a little whining and a little I can’t do this, my legs are so tired. But we pressed on and we made it. She did awesome, I felt great having had my morning workout…and we both had enough fun that she wants to go back next weekend. Plus she added that we could do it one evening for dinner too.
I must admit that riding/running 4 miles first thing in the morning was not my previous norm. I would of never even thought of that as a way to start/spend the weekend. Things are a changing…and I like it. Love it even more that it’s not just me but the whole family!
What a fun little surprise. When I first moved to Scottsdale I started searching out the area on the web. I came across Scottsdale Mom’s Blog and quickly became a follower. Funny to note I also participated in my first online giveway…and I won. These adorable headbands from Posh A La Mode.
Well tonight they had their first Mom’s Night Out. I signed up. I then last-minute got my wonderful neighbor to join in! We have had such a great time getting to know each other this week….walks & talks!
Steph and Joy did an awesome job. We started of at Chez Vous which served us delicious wine and some amazing crepes. They just moved from France a few months ago and opened shop. I will be taking TB and MB back soon…awesome atmosphere and yummy food. We then headed over to Moonbeams which I have to admit made my pocketbook happy I wasn’t having a baby or going to a shower anytime soon. They had the most adorable stuff and some many unique handmade or personalized items. I have my spot for baby gift shopping…not to mention a couple of wall hangings that I think I am going to have to go back and get for MB’s room. One said “I want to be just like Mommy when I grow up” well now it was a cuter saying than that but you get the point…and in the middle was a place to put a photo of me and MB. It was just perfect. As I write this I am wondering why I didn’t buy it tonight!
Outside of the fun venues…I met a few neighbors in the area and was surrounded by a whole bunch of local mom’s. A really cool feeling. So my first attempt of meeting the “online world” in real life was a success and lots of fun…look forward to doing it again.
Now I am just going to have to decide if I will eat the Simply Sweets cupcake now or in the morning….it is staring at me with its beautiful flower and pink icing…saying “Eat Me”
It official, the Heat is On. Today was the start of “monsoon” season…but no rain. Just hot.
To document the occasion I got my first burn. Nope not a sunburn. Got my body covered with all the right levels of sunscreen by the way how in 10 years have we gone from 15SPF to 100SPF?
Ok back to my burn. I burned my hand on the garage door. Now here is the interesting part- it wasn’t t the outside exposed to the intense sun- it was the inside of the door.
I had just collected all the trash around the house and was taking it out for the night. I watched into the sauna, whoops sorry the garage, and open the door. As I go to unlatch the screen-door my thumb gets burned. Hot, hot, hot. Now the screen-door is metal and black and after further investigation I believe the sun hits that latch- but WOW. It was hot, but I didn’t realize it would leave a mark. It did.
As I walked to the mailbox, enduring the 105 degrees, getting a little sticky – enough to make me think maybe I would get in the pool and scrub the tiles tonight. Just an excuse to cool off from my 15min walk outside. As I am walking back I notice my the big red spot on my thumb. Yep- my first burn. The first of many I imagine. Have decided the pool can wait till tomorrow- after a good hard run. That is if my bum ankle and burned thumb don’t keep me down…is it just Tuesday??? At this rate, with an incident a day, I might want to re-think the Grand Canyon hike.
Ok so it is week one of our first summer in Scottsdale. I am learning a few new things each day.
Like today I hear the A/C go on and then feel heat and smell what I think is the furnace. I go running to the thermostat, is the heat on? Nope. Ok maybe it was a fluke. Then it happens a couple more times during the day.
I finally go into Todd and say is something wrong with our A/C- why does it feel like the heat is going on. Do you feel that? Fortunately he does so I am not going nuts. Turns out when it’s over 100 outside the ducts and pipes can get a little warm so when the A/C goes on it has to pump all that hot air out before the cool air gets going. Makes sense doesn’t it.
Fortunately it only lasts for a minute or so, but it still catches me off guard each time the A/C kicks on.
Now on to getting my bum burned by the hot seat after leaving the car out in the sun for the afternoon…my neighbors are warning me of all the “hot” things to watch out for, but I am sure I will be learning by example this summer.
